Week 31. A Decision in the Making

As Uni starts again, I prepare for my upcoming Independent Learning module, I find myself at a crossroads. The freedom to choose a subject is both liberating and daunting; it is an opportunity to set the tone for the final stretch of my Master of Laws journey. Naturally, one option is to build upon the foundation I have already laid in the field of retail trading and finfluencers, an area I have been deeply immersed in throughout this degree. The case law, compliance challenges, and regulatory frameworks provide fertile ground for critical enquiry, and staying within this space could align seamlessly with my long-term ambition of pursuing a PhD.

On the other hand, there is an undeniable pull toward diversifying. Football governance, for example, has been at the centre of public debate following recent legislation, while other fields, perhaps even something entirely unexpected, could sharpen my research skills in new and challenging ways. Independent learning, after all, is not just about depth, but also breadth: the ability to critically evaluate, to test methodologies, and to push beyond familiar territory. The question is whether staying the course will solidify my expertise, or whether a detour might enrich it further.

Each pathway creates its own scenario. Sticking with retail trading could build a consistent narrative that strengthens my PhD proposal, demonstrating expertise and continuity. Exploring a new area, however, could show adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to apply legal reasoning in unfamiliar contexts. The decision is not just academic; it is strategic, shaping not only the dissertation I will submit shortly after, but the researcher, Lawyer or even Barrister I may choose become in the Future.

Exciting times ahead

From the very first day of my undergraduate law degree, I knew where I ultimately wanted to end up: pursuing a PhD. The title of Dr carries not just prestige, but also the sense of having reached the highest level of education in my country, a milestone that represents dedication, resilience, and an a strong commitment to knowledge. More importantly, it is about being in a position to make a genuine difference: to influence thinking, to challenge the status quo, and to contribute to change where it is most needed.

As I reflect on how far I have come, I realise my life is already so much more than I could ever have imagined. Each step along the way has opened new doors and revealed possibilities that once felt out of reach. Now, as I prepare for the next stage, I do so with a sense of excitement and gratitude, knowing that the journey continues to unfold in ways that both surprise and inspire me.

This reflection naturally leads me to thank the University. Without the opportunities, teaching, and support I have received here, I would not be in this position, ready to take on new challenges and move closer to the goals I set all those years ago.

KEEP GOING

This Week I Would Like to Take a Moment…

…to acknowledge all those who find themselves facing difficult decisions, whether in life, work, or study. Balancing competing demands is never easy, and the journey can often feel long and uncertain. But when the end begins to come into view, the beauty of the effort reveals itself.

To anyone reading this: keep going, keep building. Forge your own path, work hard, and above all, believe in the power of your dreams.
